3 takeaways from Packers’ Week 4 win vs. Falcons
2. Robert Tonyan steps up
Have a day, Robert Tonyan.
The Packers have desperately needed more production from their tight ends. Over the summer, Jace Sternberger looked like the obvious replacement for Jimmy Graham. Better days are head for Sternberger, but “Big Bob” Tonyan has made the most of his opportunities. Or, should we say, “Three Touchdown” Tonyan?
A breakout game looked to be on the way for Tonyan — I was a week early on my prediction — and he stepped up. With both Davante Adams and Allen Lazard out, the Packers needed another pass-catcher to make an impact. Tonyan did just that, catching all six of his targets for 98 yards and three touchdowns.
The exciting part is this doesn’t look to be a one-off performance or a fluke. Sure, Tonyan won’t catch three touchdowns every week, but this is now the third straight impressive performance by the Packers tight end. He’s caught touchdowns in each of the past three games and now has five on the year. Since Week 2, Tonyan has caught 13 of 14 targets for 173 yards and five touchdowns. He’s officially a big part of this offense.
We’ve heard a lot about Tonyan’s friendship with All-Pro tight end George Kittle. He played like him on Monday night.
