Packers could ‘ramp up’ interest in Will Fuller before trade deadline
More signs are pointing to a potential Packers trade for Will Fuller.
The search for a number two wide receiver goes on for the Green Bay Packers. One name being linked to the Packers is Will Fuller.
With the trade deadline just two days away, the Packers could look to make a move for the Houston Texans wideout.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers have “maintained interest” in Fuller dating back to the summer. Rapoport added that we should expect the interest to “ramp up” ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
Even with Allen Lazard potentially returning soon, trading for Fuller would make a ton of sense for Green Bay. He could be a game-changing addition to Matt LaFleur’s offense and a clear upgrade on Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who continues to be frustratingly inconsistent.
While Houston is unlikely to give up Fuller in a trade for nothing, it’s a deal that could make sense for both teams.
Fuller is in the final year of his deal and will become a free agent in the spring. According to Over The Cap, the Texans are projected to be around $7 million over the cap next year. Finding a way to keep Fuller could become quite challenging for the Texans.
In the short term, they’re not a team anywhere close to competing. With a head coach change and an awful 1-6 record, the Texans’ focus should be on the future and not the present.
With Fuller potentially leaving next spring anyway, bringing back a draft pick now would be a smart move.
And the benefit of this trade for the Packers is obvious. They’re a team competing for the Super Bowl and looking to add more talent at an area of need. While the offense has been dominant for most of the season, against strong defenses, a legitimate deep threat and consistent number two receiver like Fuller could make all the difference.
It should make for an interesting couple of days, at least.
