Packers reach trade deadline without making any moves
The Packers won’t be trading for Will Fuller.
If you were hoping for the Green Bay Packers to make a move before the trade deadline, it’s been a disappointing day.
Despite being strongly linked to Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller for the past week or so, no deal has been made. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers and Texans couldn’t agree on value.
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans were asking for a second-round pick in return for Fuller. Considering Fuller will become a free agent in the spring, that’s a high price to pay so it’s no surprise they couldn’t come to an agreement.
There’s absolutely no doubt that Fuller could’ve been a great addition to this offense, but Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is unwilling to pay more than he believes is worth it.
The same was similar a year ago. Robby Anderson’s name kept coming up in trade rumors but the Packers didn’t work out a deal. This season, it’s Fuller.
Green Bay continues to show interest in adding a wide receiver without actually doing so. We saw the same in the draft. As the wide receivers kept coming off the board, Gutekunst decided not to join in. He should be applauded for not chasing needs and going for value, but it’s clear the Packers could do with more help at wide receiver and that’s been true for a while.
Perhaps surprisingly, Green Bay also didn’t make any moves for defensive help. This team will need improvements from within to get better on this side of the ball.
But there are positives to this. The Packers have a talented roster and also keep all of their draft picks. Given the likelihood of a reduced salary cap next year, drafting well will be especially important.
Should Gutekunst have made a move before the trade deadline?
