Same old Packers blow it again at the trade deadline
By Evan Siegel
The Packers once again balked at the chance to improve what is a very flawed roster.
The Green Bay Packers were given yet another opportunity to improve what is an extremely flawed team, and blew it. The Packers passed on the chance to add wide receiver, defensive line, or linebacker help in yet another inexplicably conservative decision on the part of management.
Most of the noise was surrounding Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller V after rumors began to swirl about his availability.
The Packers, predictably, passed giving up draft compensation for Fuller, presumably over a difference in how much of Fuller’s salary should have been taken care of by the Texans. Green Bay gave up on the potential deal altogether.
But what is so troubling, is this is yet another admission by Brian Gutekunst and his staff that his receiving corps is nowhere near good enough beyond an often-injured Davante Adams.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling is an absolute disaster. He has caught just 16 balls in seven games with a single touchdown. This is coming off a miserable second half of last season, where he caught just 26 passes all season and played a single down in the NFC Championship. Well, even though the team knows he is completely unreliable, he will be one of the main receivers in a playoff game in Green Bay.
The Packers draft class is contributing less than any other team’s to this point in the season. In the order in which they were drafted, the Packers have a third-string quarterback, fourth-string running back, third-string tight end, second-string linebacker, backup offensive lineman, fourth-string defensive end, and fourth-string safety all barely playing.
While that could be seen as a testament to the team’s depth, there is no question the Packers run defense is still remarkably bad and will get exposed yet again in the playoffs.
Somehow, after watching the debacle that was the NFC Championship game, the Packers are sticking with Dean Lowry, Tyler Lancaster, and Montravius Adams in the middle of their line next to the overhyped Kenny Clark. That is inexcusable. The Packers are once again a good team that will be exposed come playoff time.
