3. Jamaal Williams

This would be a tough one for the Packers. Jamaal Williams is having his best season yet and is a key piece of Matt LaFleur’s offense. Williams is the Packers’ number two running back but deserves to be a starter, as he’s proven when given that opportunity.

In the two games Aaron Jones missed through injury this season, Williams had a total of 45 touches for 216 yards and a touchdown. He’s currently on pace for career-best numbers in both rushing and receiving and has proven his ability to be the lead back.

The Packers would love Williams back, there’s no doubt about that.

But Jones and left tackle David Bakhtiari are also free agents and the team invested a second-round pick at the running back position this year. With a reduced salary cap likely, the Packers will need to be careful with any new deals they make in order to maintain a healthy cap. Unfortunately, this could mean Williams moves elsewhere and becomes a starting running back for another team.

Even before the pandemic, a limited amount of cap room would’ve made it a challenge to re-sign Williams, but a reduced cap would only make that more difficult. It would be great to see Williams back but I don’t see it happening.
