Packers tried to sign Damon Harrison off Seahawks practice squad
The Packers tried to sign Damon Harrison.
The Green Bay Packers understand their run defense hasn’t been good enough. A player who could’ve helped was Damon Harrison.
And the Packers tried to bring him to Green Bay.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Packers and Baltimore Ravens tried to sign Harrison off the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad today but Harrison has instead been signed to Seattle’s active roster.
Harrison has spent time on the Seahawks’ practice squad this season under the new rules. The Seahawks had been elevating Harrison from the practice squad to play in games, but they’re now out of elevations and for him to continue to play, he needed to be promoted to the active roster.
It’s no surprise the Seahawks made the move, but also equally unsurprising that the Packers were interested in signing him.
There’s no doubt “Snacks” Harrison could help this defense improve against the run. The former first-team All-Pro has played two games for the Seahawks this season with one tackle.
Green Bay’s defense has continued to struggle this season. In Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts, they allowed 140 yards on 37 carries. Rookie Jonathan Taylor led the way with 90 yards from 22 attempts. The Packers actually defended the run fairly well in the first half but struggled in the second half.
With the possibility of signing Harrison now gone, this defense will need to find other ways to improve against the run. Getting inside linebacker Kamal Martin on the field more often will help. He has impressed since returning from injury.
However, it’s unlikely we’ll see big improvements from a run defense that has struggled since the start of the 2019 season. This team will need to win despite the struggles up front defensively, which likely means building early leads and forcing opponents to play from behind, something we’ve seen a lot this season.
