Packers: Three standout performances from Week 11 loss to Colts
By Jesse Fry
2. Robert Tonyan
Stat line: 5 catches, 55 yards, 1 TD
A week after just missing on a big play, Rodgers and Robert Tonyan were finally able to connect for a big play, a 25-yard touchdown.
What this game might be remembered more for with Tonyan is the play that never happened. On third down in the Packers’ last possession, Rodgers looked for his go-to guy Davante Adams running a corner route. What he missed was a wide-open Tonyan on the other side running the same route.
Adams had drawn the coverage his way, but because he was either too focused on Adams or the fear of not having the time, Rodgers threw the ball over Adams’ head and out of bounds. Had Rodgers just looked his way, we may be talking about a four-point victory instead of a three-point loss.
Hindsight is 20/20 and it’s easy to criticize from the couch, but the guy was open.
Regardless, Tonyan is putting together a strong season and looking like he could be a big player as the season goes along. He’s second on the team with six touchdowns and is putting together the best season by a tight end for the Packers since Jermichael Finley’s career was cut short by a neck injury.
Bobby Tonyan still has six games left to add to his totals and he should only get more opportunities as the weather turns. A big target over the middle could be a quarterback’s best friend when the snow falls and temperatures drop.
