Savage broke out in a big way for the Packers this season

Breakout #2: Darnell Savage

Finishing up the quartet of players from the 2019 draft class with Darnell Savage shows just how good this class was for Green Bay and we’re only two seasons in. Savage was the second of two first-round selections by the Packers that year and has been a starter since day one.

Savage stepped up big-time in year two, building beautifully on an already solid rookie campaign. Doubling his interceptions and pass deflections, Savage has shown that he has an eye for the ball, something that has been lacking at the safety position in Green Bay since the Nick Collins days.

There were high expectations for Savage since the day he was drafted and I would say in year two he has already lived up to expectations and will continue to raise them. Savage, along with Adrian Amos, make up one of the best safety tandems in the league and they may get even better with Savage’s development.

His second half of the season is where he really made a difference. After getting off to a little bit of a slow start in 2020, he turned it up to another gear as the season progressed. It’s no coincidence that once Savage started playing well, the defense as a whole started playing much better than when they started.

Those first few weeks were brutal to watch for Packers fans and I’m sure many had flashbacks to older Packers teams that couldn’t be stopped on offense but also couldn’t stop anyone on defense.
