Packers: Three affordable free agents to target in 2021
1. Brian Poole, CB
Cornerback is Green Bay’s number one need this offseason with Kevin King possibly signing elsewhere in free agency. It’s also possible the Packers could look to improve at slot corner. While Chandon Sullivan is coming off a solid season, it’s possible the Packers could still look to get better at this position.
That’s where Brian Poole could come in.
According to Pro Football Focus, Poole has the second-highest coverage grade since 2019 among free agent cornerbacks this offseason. The only corner with a better grade is Richard Sherman.
Poole played in nine games this past season, making seven pass defenses, two interceptions, and a sack. According to Pro Football Reference, he allowed a passer rating of 61.6 in his coverage, a career-best.
Importantly for the Packers, they could be able to afford to sign Poole. Spotrac estimates that Poole will make around $4.3 million per year in free agency. It’s possible teams will offer less as Poole is coming off an injury-hit season.
While outside corner would remain a need, adding a player in free agency who could become the Packers’ top nickel corner? Sounds good to me. And at less than $5 million per year, this would be a great move for the Packers.
