Safety might not be considered a top need for the Packers, but they should consider adding depth behind starters Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage this offseason. That’s especially true if Raven Greene — who is a restricted free agent — doesn’t return.

It’s possible the Packers could get tremendous value in free agency by signing experienced safety Tre Boston. While Boston is set to join his fifth team since entering the league in 2014, there’s no doubt he’s a talented player.

Over the past five seasons, Boston has 39 pass defenses and 14 interceptions. In that time, he’s made three or more interceptions in three different seasons.

In terms of experience, we’re talking about a player with 104 games and 76 starts in his NFL career. A safety trio of Amos, Savage, and Boston would be one of the best in the league and would give new defensive coordinator Joe Barry more options in the secondary.

In terms of contract, Pro Football Focus predicts that Boston will sign a one-year deal worth $2.25 million with $1.25 million guaranteed.

This is exactly the type of move the Packers need to make. Low-risk. High-upside. To add a talented, experienced player like Boston to the secondary on an affordable deal would only help this defense improve.
