Packers 2021 free agency predictions: Who stays, who goes?
Kevin King: Walks
Much will be made of Kevin King’s performance in the NFC Championship Game, which is understandable although perhaps unfair. It was one game, after all. However, there’s no question King’s performances throughout the season fell short of expectations after impressing in 2019.
Allowing a passer rating of 96.2 in his coverage, according to Pro Football Reference, King didn’t have his best season. He also missed five games, a concern as King has struggled to stay healthy with the exception of the 2019 season.
With little cap room to work with, it’s hard to see the Packers bringing King back this offseason unless it’s on a very affordable deal. Perhaps a one-year “prove it” style contract.
But given that he has been a solid starter at cornerback when healthy, something not easy to find, there’s a good chance another team will be willing to take the risk to sign him. Especially teams with more cap room.
It would mean cornerback becomes an even bigger need, but we could see some significant changes at the position this offseason as the Packers look to strengthen their depth behind All-Pro Jaire Alexander. Who starts opposite Alexander in Week 1 remains to be seen, but my prediction is that it won’t be King.
