The moment the Green Bay Packers traded up for Jordan Love in last year’s draft, the conversation about Aaron Rodgers‘ future began.

It was a key storyline throughout the 2020 season, which saw Rodgers earn his third NFL MVP award, and is now a big talking point this offseason.

Speaking to ESPN’s Kenny Mayne, Rodgers was again asked about his future but his answer remains mostly the same. He doesn’t know what to expect.

“I said last year, I didn’t know if that was actually possible to be able to finish there,” Rodgers said when asked if he wants to remain a Packer for the rest of his career. “I still feel like that’s kind of where we’re at, I don’t know that a lot of that’s in my hands.”

The Packers haven’t yet taken any steps this offseason to show much commitment to Rodgers beyond 2021. Had they given him a contract extension or even restructured his deal, it would be a sign they aren’t thinking too much beyond Rodgers.

Restructuring his deal would’ve pushed money out of the current year and into future years, making it more challenging to release or trade him in upcoming offseasons. Having not done so (yet, at least), it will be easier to move on from 2022 should they wish to.

It will be the million dollar question throughout this offseason, and the next, and potentially the next. Until either Green Bay makes it clear its commitment is to keep Rodgers until he decides to retire, or the team makes the transition to Jordan Love, this question will keep on coming up.

Unfortunately, we may have to get used to hearing Rodgers’ future discussed for some time to come. Just like it was the number one offseason topic a year ago (along with the Packers not drafting a wide receiver), it could be the same again in 2021.
