Packers stick to plan of re-signing their own free agents
While it can be considered a fairly quiet offseason for the Green Bay Packers a few weeks into free agency, they have been able to re-sign a surprising number of their own free agents.
If the plan is for the Packers to run it back for 2021, they’ve done a good job of that so far.
It seemed unlikely the Packers would have the cap space to be able to re-sign many of their free agents but they’ve made it possible.
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that Green Bay has re-signed defensive tackle Tyler Lancaster. The team had declined the option to use a restricted free agent tender earlier in the offseason but worked out a new deal.
Following this, the Packers have also announced that they’ve re-signed safety Will Redmond.
Make that five free agents Green Bay has now re-signed. Along with Lancaster and Redmond, the team has also re-signed star running back Aaron Jones, veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis, and starting cornerback Kevin King.
While the team hasn’t been particularly active when it comes to signing outside free agents, Green Bay has done a good job of re-signing many of its own free agents. For a team that has reached the NFC Championship Game twice in as many years, that’s not such a bad thing.
They have, of course, lost a couple of important players. All-Pro center Corey Linsley joins former Packers teammate Bryan Bulaga on the Los Angeles’ Chargers offensive line, while talented running back Jamaal Williams will meet the Packers twice a year with the Detroit Lions, his new team. Future Hall-of-Famer Tim Boyle also signed with the Lions this offseason.
There’s still time to add players, but it sure seems the Packers’ plan has been to focus on re-signing their own free agents rather than making too many moves elsewhere.
