Packers 2021 pre-draft preview: Finally time for a wide receiver?
Another year, another draft and we’re still talking about wide receivers when it comes to the Green Bay Packers.
Last spring, we all seemed certain the Packers would address the position at some point. They never did. Maybe it’ll be different in 2021.
Ahead of the draft later this month, we continue to look at various position groups for the Packers. Up next is wide receiver.
Free agency recap
Not much changed at receiver in free agency. The Packers brought back Allen Lazard on an exclusive-rights free agent tender, as expected. Meanwhile, Devin Funchess took a pay cut to remain in Green Bay.
Funchess was a free-agent signing a year ago but opted out of the 2020 season. He’s set to return this year.
Need in the draft?
Yes.
While Davante Adams is coming off a career-year that included setting new franchise records and leading the NFL with 18 receiving touchdowns, there’s no doubt more work can be done to help Adams at receiver.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling made some huge plays throughout the season, including in the NFC Championship Game, and Allen Lazard is a good complementary receiver.
But can the Packers get better at receiver next to Adams? Absolutely.
Draft outlook
Where Green Bay’s offense could improve is with a receiver who excels after the catch. Clemson’s Amari Rodgers comes to mind. As Lombardi Ave’s Daire Carragher writes, he could be Randall Cobb 2.0 in the Packers’ offense.
While last season showed that this offense can be great, even if Adams misses a few games, adding another difference-maker at wide receiver would go a long way.
While not as big a need as cornerback or defensive tackle, adding a receiver early makes a ton of sense. There were too many mistakes and dropped passes from the Packers receivers throughout the season.
With Adams a great all-round receiver, MVS one of the league’s best deep threats, and Lazard and Funchess providing some depth, the Packers are in good shape. Now add in a slot receiver who is great after the catch. Good luck stopping that offense.
