One of the most underrated moves made by Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst in recent years was signing Adrian Amos.

In the two seasons since, Amos has started all 32 games and has been an important part of the secondary, right from making a game-clinching interception in his debut.

Amos finished 2020 with nine pass defenses, tying his career-best, while also making two interceptions. When he signed with Green Bay, many said Amos was a solid player but didn’t make enough big plays, but he now has four interceptions over the past two years.

And the former Chicago Bear was also phenomenal in coverage last season. According to Pro Football Focus, he had a coverage grade of 92.1, highest among safeties in the NFL.

Amos signed with the Packers two years ago. It was a busy opening week of free agency that saw the team also sign Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Billy Turner.

Za’Darius Smith is one of the best pass rushers in football, Preston Smith had double-digit sacks in 2019, while Turner has been a valuable addition on offense and was a starter at right tackle last year.

The signing of Za’Darius Smith deservedly gets a lot of praise. He’s been one of the Packers’ best defensive players and he can make a game-changing play at any moment.

But the decision to sign Amos then draft Darnell Savage in the first round slips under the radar. In one offseason, Gutekunst turned a weakness on defense into a strength. Now, Amos and Savage form one of the best starting safety tandems in the entire league.

Amos has been consistent every single week, while Savage is developing into a star and a game-changing talent, evident by the four interceptions he made in the second half of 2020.

There’s reason to be excited about the Amos and Savage partnership moving forward.
