Packers roster ranked fourth in the NFL by PFF entering 2021 draft
For salary cap reasons, the Green Bay Packers were quiet in free agency. They focused instead on re-signing their own free agents like Aaron Jones and Kevin King.
But there’s good reason for that. The roster is really talented.
The Packers didn’t make consecutive NFC title games by fluke. It wasn’t one player or one coach who made it happen. Sure, having the NFL MVP on the team helped last season, but it’s the talent of the entire roster that has helped the Packers go 26-6 in the regular season since 2019.
Entering this week’s draft, Pro Football Focus has ranked each roster in the NFL, which is “heavily influenced by the two-year PFF WAR”, which stands for wins above replacement.
The Packers are fourth in the rankings, which highlights just how talented the roster is as we enter the draft.
Of course, the three-day draft will change things. Some rosters will improve more than others. Many teams will find players who make an impact from Day 1, others will find less success in 2021.
It doesn’t help Green Bay that it won’t pick in the first round until No. 29, although it’s worth noting that GM Brian Gutekunst said he’s open to trading up, something he’s done every year since taking the job.
If the Packers can fix their needs at positions such as cornerback and inside linebacker, while ensuring the offensive line is ready to go in Week 1, you could make a case they’d have the best roster in the league.
Even before we factor in this week’s draft, the Packers should again have one of the most talented rosters in the league with star players across the board. After all, let’s not forget they had six players named All-Pros last season, including four in the first team (although Corey Linsley now plays for the Los Angeles Chargers).
A talented roster will make them one of the NFC favorites again in 2021.
