Cornerback should be a priority position for Green Bay

Scenario #3: Greg Newsome II at 29

Greg Newsome II is one of my draft crushes this year and I would absolutely love for the Packers to be able to snatch him on Thursday night. It’s very possible that Newsome can go early but I think he will go anywhere between 15 and 32.

Newsome is my CB3 in this year’s draft and it would be a steal to get him at 29. Something that isn’t helping Green Bay is the documented injury history of one Caleb Farley. If you’re just looking at overall talent, Farley may be the number one CB in the draft.

Unfortunately, some teams will probably pass on Farley and I think Green Bay should be one of them. Newsome comes into the draft after a very good career at Northwestern albeit with some caveats of his own. He was playing well in 2019 before suffering an injury to end his season.

In 2020, Newsome looked great although it was in only six regular-season games due to a shortened season. He then suffered a groin injury in the Big Ten Championship where he decided to skip the team’s Bowl game to get ready for the draft.

If the Packers select Newsome, I think he has a real shot to start opposite of Jaire Alexander in week one. Even with Kevin King and Chandon Sullivan coming back, I’d argue that CB is a big need for the Green Bay Packers.
