The Green Bay Packers have made their first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft and, no, it wasn’t a wide receiver. There’s a surprise.
But the Packers did address their biggest need entering the draft which was at cornerback, selecting Georgia’s Eric Stokes.
Adding some competition for Kevin King and finding a long-term starter opposite Jaire Alexander needed to be one of the team’s top priorities early in the draft, and it seems general manager Brian Gutekunst agreed.
It’s been an interesting day for the Packers. Following all of the talk about Aaron Rodgers’ future, many wondered whether the team would respond by drafting a wide receiver. But you could argue they made the right call to make the team better rather than getting Rodgers another pass catcher. And Stokes helps improve the defense at a premium position, and that will count in 2021 and beyond.
How did Twitter react to the Packers’ first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?
With the No. 29 overall pick in the 2021 @NFLDraft, the @packers select CB Eric Stokes!

There’s a lot to like about Stokes’ potential in Joe Barry’s defense.
With the 29th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, #Packers select: Eric Stokes, cornerback, Georgia. Fills maybe the biggest team need with a freak athlete who ran a 4.25 40 at pro day. Terrific size at 6-1, 194 pounds. Good add to a secondary that was torched in NFC title game.

The @packers needed another top notch cover guy and Eric Stokes has a lot of traits to be a big time corner. Good size and strength. And he can fly straight away.

Eric Stokes was the best CB left on the Packers hot list.

Big. Physical. Ran 4.2’s and jumped over 40. Guy is an absolute physical marvel.
But as Andy Herman of Cheesehead TV points out, the Packers have selected a lot of cornerbacks early in the draft in recent years.
2015: CB Damarious Randall

2017: CB Kevin King
2018: CB Jaire Alexander
2021: CB Eric Stokes
Four first selection corners in 7 years.
And then we can also add in second-round picks Quinten Rollins and Josh Jackson. Kevin King has been a good player and a starter, and Jaire Alexander was a home-run pick, but Green Bay needs to get this one right.
One thing is for sure. The Packers have invested a lot into their secondary in recent years. They have an All-Pro in Alexander, an experienced starter in King, as well as two very talented safeties in Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage.
Strengthening the depth at cornerback was a must. And Stokes helps this defense.
