Packers projected to get two compensatory draft picks in 2022
The Green Bay Packers had three compensatory draft picks in last week’s NFL Draft.
They look set to have a couple more next April. According to Over The Cap’s projections for the 2022 NFL Draft, the Packers could receive two compensatory picks a year from now.
While the exact formula to determine who receives these extra draft picks is unclear, it’s based on the previous offseason’s free agency. If you spend more on players coming in than players you lose, you’re unlikely to get any picks. If it’s the opposite, you might receive some picks.
It sure seems likely the Packers will have at least one compensatory draft pick in 2022 as they didn’t sign a single free agent from another team. Any player they sign now won’t count towards the compensatory pick decisions.
As Over The Cap notes, they could receive additional picks for losing All-Pro center Corey Linsley and running back Jamaal Williams in this year’s free agency. They project that Green Bay will receive a fourth-round pick for losing Linsley and a sixth-rounder for losing Williams. They do note that the Linsley pick could possibly be a third-rounder.
So if the Packers do indeed receive two compensatory picks for 2022, they’ll enter the draft with a good number of picks again. As things stand, the total would be nine.
Of course, much could change between now and then. Maybe Green Bay will go all-in for a player before the trade deadline and give up 2022 picks in a deal. Or perhaps the opposite will happen. What if Aaron Rodgers does actually get traded? It’s possible the Packers would receive a boatload of picks as a result and could enter the 2022 draft with a lot to work with.
But that’s a conversation for another day. For now, the good news is it seems the Packers should again receive a compensatory draft pick or two in 2022.
