The quarterback room for the Green Bay Packers remains under the spotlight.

Will Aaron Rodgers return? Will he be traded to another team? Will he even retire? The fact is, nobody really knows at this point.

We’ll get into all of that in this roster breakdown.

Currently on the roster

Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love, Blake Bortles, Kurt Benkert

Offseason moves

The Packers didn’t bring back free-agent Tim Boyle, who has signed with the Detroit Lions. Is it any coincidence everything falls apart once Boyle leaves? I think not.

In recent weeks, the team has signed veteran Blake Bortles and 2018 undrafted free agent Kurt Benkert, taking the number of QBs on the roster to four.

Improved from 2020?

No. Losing Boyle but gaining Bortles doesn’t feel like a step forward or backward. Bortles has more experience, but while he has worked under Sean McVay (similar system) and Nathaniel Hackett, Boyle knew Matt LaFleur’s offense inside out.

Key player

Aaron Rodgers.

No explanation needed here other than three letters: M-V-P.

Position outlook

The Packers currently have four quarterbacks under contract. That’s about as much as we know.

Who will be starting in Week 1? It could be any one of Rodgers, Love, or Bortles. That’s how complicated this has become. We don’t even know whether Rodgers will still be on the roster come September.

Since ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on draft day that Rodgers “does not want to return”, we’ve heard endless rumors and speculation about his future.

We’ve heard from team president Mark Murphy, general manager Brian Gutekunst, and head coach Matt LaFleur, who have all made it clear they want Rodgers back. But we’re yet to hear from Rodgers publicly about this.

Maybe this ends with Rodgers being traded after June 1, when the Packers would get a more manageable cap situation. Maybe Rodgers puts together another MVP season in Green Bay.

Until we have the answer on Rodgers’ future, it’s tough to make too many predictions at quarterback.
