With Aaron Rodgers not at the Green Bay Packers‘ OTAs this week, the team gets to take a closer look at second-year quarterback Jordan Love.

And, who knows, maybe Love will be asked to start this season if Rodgers decides not to play. While the future of the Packers’ three-time MVP remains uncertain, the team has returned to the practice field for OTAs this week.

Speaking to the media following Tuesday’s session, head coach Matt LaFleur spoke about Love’s development. While it’s early on, Love sounded impressed by what he’s seen from Green Bay’s 2020 first-round pick.

“You can tell he put some work in this offseason on his own,” LaFleur said. “The ball is really jumping out of his hands well right now.”

That’s an encouraging sign. It shows Love has been working hard over the past few months. But it’s still far too early to have any idea whether he would be ready to start in the regular season if needed.

LaFleur made it clear that Love still has work to do.

“We’re excited about some of the progress we’ve seen with him but certainly there’s a long way to go there,” LaFleur said.

Love didn’t play a single snap last season. The Packers went with Tim Boyle as the number two QB, which allowed Love to sit and learn without ever being called on to play in the regular season.

That could all change in 2021.

If Rodgers is back, we can assume Love will be the backup. If Rodgers isn’t back, could Love start? Or will the Packers turn to veteran Blake Bortles to give Love more time to learn?

LaFleur and his coaching staff need to get every quarterback ready for the regular season, which begins in less than three months.

Rodgers’ future remains up in the air. Maybe he’ll sign an extension and return in the near future, but perhaps he won’t play for the Packers again.

Until we know, the Packers need to assume it’ll be either Love or Bortles out there in Week 1. It makes it an important summer for Love, but it’s clear he’s working hard to improve based on LaFleur’s comments on Tuesday.
