Packers: 5 players who could surprisingly still be cut
4. Devin Funchess
We finally got to see Devin Funchess in a Packers uniform this month. Funchess opted out of the 2020 season but was on the practice field for mandatory minicamp last week. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky noted that he “looks the part”.
That’s encouraging news as Funchess has been a good number two wide receiver in the past and has plenty to offer this offense. However, it’s anything but a guarantee that he’ll make the 53-man roster.
The Packers will likely keep either five or six wide receivers on the initial 53 in September, and Funchess will face some competition for a spot.
Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are all roster locks. They aren’t going anywhere. We can almost certainly add third-round pick Amari Rodgers to that group. That’s four spots gone with one or two remaining. Funchess will face competition from Equanimeous St. Brown, Malik Taylor, and Juwann Winfree. Winfree has been impressive so far this summer.
Funchess has a great opportunity to make the roster and play an important part on offense for the Packers. But don’t forget he hasn’t played much football over the past couple of years and faces some competition for a spot on the 53-man roster.
