Packers: 5 players who could surprisingly still be cut
2. Dean Lowry
If anything, the Packers’ lack of defensive line depth rather than Dean Lowry’s performances would make this a surprise. Lowry does have lots of experience having made 51 starts in five years for the Packers, but he’s yet to live up to expectations.
According to Spotrac, cutting Lowry would save the team just over $1.6 million on the cap. That’s not a whole lot but, again, given the team’s current cap situation, that could help them quite a bit.
Lowry made 36 tackles, two tackles for loss, three sacks, and four quarterback hits last season. He’s a solid player but has been unable to push on and reach the level many expected when he signed a three-year contract extension back in 2019.
Some fans viewed that decision as a head-scratching one at the time, especially as it came the same week as the Packers released Mike Daniels. Unfortunately, fans’ concerns have proven true.
Why releasing Lowry would be considered a surprise is because he’s a solid player and has experience. Not to mention the team’s lack of depth along the defensive line. However, the team did draft T.J. Slaton in the fifth round and, who knows, maybe they’ll sign a veteran free agent.
In any case, cutting Lowry could create some much-needed cap room for the Packers.
