The Packers have an excellent secondary and two great starting safeties in Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage, although the team doesn’t have great depth at the position. Imagine the flexibility defensive coordinator Joe Barry would have if the Packers had three top safeties. The potential to get all three on the field together and find the best role for each of them would give Green Bay all sorts of options in the secondary.

And that’s why Tyrann Mathieu would be a dream signing for the Packers in a free agency. He’s one of the top safeties in football and is a game-changer.

Three times a first-team All-Pro and twice a Pro Bowler, Mathieu can make any defense better, as we’ve seen with the Kansas City Chiefs over the past two years. In 31 regular-season games with the Chiefs, Mathieu has made 21 pass defenses and 10 interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

It’s unlikely the Packers will be able to compete with other teams with more cap space, and considering they are already set at safety, it’s more likely they’d target other positions in free agency. But that doesn’t mean Mathieu couldn’t help this defense reach another level, and it would be great to see him playing in Green Bay.
