The Green Bay Packers finally have some continuity at the tight end position.

The Packers had turned to free agency and the draft with regularity in recent years, but Robert Tonyan’s big season in 2020 meant there was no need to add another tight end this offseason.

The team hasn’t made many changes at tight end and decided to go forward with the top four they had last season.

Who’s here?

Coming off his breakout season, Robert Tonyan returns in 2021. He was a restricted free agent this offseason but the Packers re-signed him. He’ll be aiming to build on his 11-touchdown season.

The Packers also re-signed Marcedes Lewis, who was an unrestricted free agent. Lewis has been a key part of Green Bay’s offense ever since Matt LaFleur was named head coach in 2019.

Third-year Jace Sternberger and second-year Josiah Deguara will both be looking to make an impact this season.

A player to watch this summer is Dominique Dafney, who impressed last year and will be aiming to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

The other tight ends currently on the roster are Bronson Kaufusi and Isaac Nauta.

Expectations

The Packers should have high expectations at tight end again this year.

Tonyan proved in 2020 that he can be the team’s featured tight end with his ability to block and catch passes. His best work comes in the receiving game. He’s a good route-runner, gets in the right positions, and never drops passes. He earned Aaron Rodgers’ trust and made the most of his opportunities, catching 11 touchdowns last season.

Re-signing Lewis was an easy choice considering how well he’s played over the past two seasons. If he can stay healthy, Deguara could be set for a big year, being used mostly as a blocker but also capable of catching passes.

The Packers will also hope Sternberger can contribute in the receiving game, although he will be out of the opening two games of the regular season due to suspension.

With Tonyan and Lewis re-signed, and Deguara returning from injury, the Packers are set at tight end entering training camp.
