Packers: Four solutions to Davante Adams’ contract situation
1. Make Adams the highest-paid WR in NFL on new deal
From the Packers’ perspective, far and away the best scenario would be to work out a long-term extension. This would mean Green Bay keeps one of the league’s top wide receivers under contract for many more years to come and potentially even to the end of Adams’ career.
Adams isn’t a player who relies on elite speed, and his style of play could suit him well into his 30s, meaning he can extend his career for many years to come. Adams also hasn’t been hit with many significant injuries in his career. The most games he’s missed in a single season is four.
But for the Packers to finally work out an extension with Adams, they’ll need to increase their offer. According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Packers “don’t want to recognize DeAndre Hopkins’ deal when considering Adams'”. Hopkins is the highest-paid WR in the NFL.
The team would need to reconsider their position on what they’re offering. They don’t often give big third contracts to wide receivers, but Adams is so good that he should be an exception to the rule.
If not, the Packers face the potential reality of losing both Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams next offseason.
