Packers: 5 players who are shining at training camp
Chauncey Rivers
Edge rusher Chauncey Rivers was claimed off waivers only a couple of weeks ago, but he’s made a strong start and has put his name right in the mix for the fourth spot at outside linebacker.
Seemingly every practice, Rivers’ name comes up after he makes a big play. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky tweeted last week that Rivers was “having a day”.
It’s performances like this in practice that will help Rivers improve his chances of making the 53-man roster as the fourth pass rusher behind Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Rashan Gary.
Paul Bretl of Dairyland Express noted on Thursday that Rivers “continues to make a few plays each practice”.
Rivers is entering his second season in the NFL. He was an undrafted free agent last year and spent most of 2020 on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. The Ravens waived Rivers earlier this summer, but that might prove to be a mistake as he’s made an impact for the Packers on the practice field since joining the team.
Zach Kruse of Packers Wire predicted this week that Rivers will make the 53-man roster as the fourth edge rusher. The number four spot is wide open and Rivers is making the most of his opportunities. If he can continue to build on this in the coming weeks, don’t be surprised if Kruse’s prediction comes true.
