Packers: Devin Funchess placed on IR, ending his season
Devin Funchess won’t be playing for the Green Bay Packers in 2021.
Devin Funchess has had some awful injury luck in recent years, and that has continued in his second season for the Green Bay Packers.
Funchess hasn’t played a regular-season snap in the NFL since September 2019, which turned out to be his only game that year.
He now won’t be playing for the Packers in 2021. The team announced on Wednesday that they have placed Funchess on injured reserve. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury.
As he has been placed on IR before being named part of the 53-man roster, it means his season is over and he can’t return for the Packers. Had he been named part of the initial 53 in a couple of weeks and then placed on injured reserve, there would’ve been the option to bring him back after he had missed three games.
It’s unfortunate for Funchess, who has been unable to play much regular-season football since leaving the Carolina Panthers in the 2019 offseason.
He got hurt in his debut with the Indianapolis Colts, ending his 2019 season after only one game. Last year, in his first season with the Packers, Funchess opted out due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And now, a hamstring injury means he ends up on IR and won’t play for the Packers this season.
There’s a possibility Funchess could leave with an injury settlement at some point, which would allow him to sign with another team. If he’s healthy, that could become an option. But he won’t be able to play for the Packers this season.
Funchess had impressed during the Family Night scrimmage and Green Bay’s opening preseason game, but he missed last week’s contest against the New York Jets due to injury.
With Funchess becoming a free agent next offseason, it seems likely we’ll never see him play in the regular season for the Packers.
