3. Overall, the Packers should be encouraged

It’s far too early to determine whether Love will be a longtime starting quarterback for the Packers, but we should be encouraged by his preseason performances. Outside of a couple of plays he’ll want back, Love looked comfortable against a talented starting Bills defense.

He was accurate and, for the most part, made good decisions. As mentioned, his biggest mistakes came when the play broke down.

Most encouraging about his first-half display against the Bills was that he was playing with mostly backups against a first-team Bills defensive unit. No Davante Adams. No Aaron Jones. No Robert Tonyan or Marcedes Lewis. No David Bakhtiari or Elgton Jenkins. But he still played well.

The positives far outweigh the negatives for Love during this preseason. He’s shown plenty of the traits that made him a first-round pick. There’s work to do, but that’s always the case with young quarterbacks.

These preseason reps will be vital to his development. With his coaches, Love will be able to take plenty away from the two games he played and work on the areas he needs improve. He also now gets to spend another season on the practice field with a three-time MVP, develop his game, and learn from the very best.

It’s rare for a young QB to go through their first preseason without making mistakes. Rodgers didn’t exactly dominate in his first preseason. According to The Football Database, in 2005, Rodgers went 20/37 for 172 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in his first preseason.

It takes time. Love has played well over the past few weeks and has shown significant improvements to his game. There was a lot to like about the way he played, and it’s a good sign moving forward.
