DT Marvin Wilson

An undrafted free agent earlier this year, defensive tackle Marvin Wilson had plenty of interest around the league. Wilson was a surprise cut by the Cleveland Browns earlier this week.

The Packers kept six defensive linemen on their initial 53-man roster, so it might be difficult to find room to keep a seventh. That said, considering Wilson’s potential, he could be worth adding if they can put in a successful waiver claim.

Green Bay’s defensive line has been an area of concern in recent years. The defense needed to help Kenny Clark this offseason. They will be hoping rookie TJ Slaton and preseason-standout Jack Heflin can make a difference.

Perhaps Wilson could, too.

Pro Football Focus named Wilson the second-best undrafted free-agent signing this past spring, noting that he was “one of the best defenders in the country over the 2018 and 2019 seasons” before his performances dropped in 2020.

Between 2018 and 2019, Wilson had 8.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss at Florida State.

There’s a reason why he didn’t make the Browns’ roster, and the Packers already have six defensive linemen on their initial 53. However, if they can make the room, it’s still possible Wilson can become a talented player at the next level.
