The Packers are reportedly waiving Jace Sternberger.

Entering the league as a third-round pick only two years ago, Jace Sternberger was expected to eventually become a featured part of the Green Bay Packers‘ offense.

Unfortunately, it never quite worked out. With his two-game suspension coming to an end this week, the Packers had to decide whether to make room for him on the 53-man roster.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers have waived Sternberger.

It’s a disappointing end to Sternberger’s time in Green Bay as he had the potential to become a good pass-catching tight end in this offense.

Sternberger had limited opportunities on offense over the past two seasons, but struggled when he did see the field. He only had one target in the six regular-season games he played in 2019, going without a reception until the playoffs.

In 2020, Sternberger caught 12 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, but was a backup behind tight ends Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis.

This move doesn’t come as a surprise. The Packers are set at tight end with Tonyan and Lewis at the top of the depth chart, while second-year Josiah Deguara will have a role to play once he returns from injury.

Dominique Dafney has also played well in the opportunities he’s had. According to Pro Football Reference, Dafney played on 45 percent of Green Bay’s offensive snaps in the Week 2 win over the Detroit Lions.

The Packers had high hopes for Sternberger, who had an excellent final season at Texas A&M. In 2018, he caught 48 passes for 832 yards and 10 touchdowns. But for one reason or another, it never quite worked out for him in his two seasons in Green Bay.

Hopefully Sternberger will quickly land with a new team and become an important player on offense for another team in the near future.
