3. Tight end

Not so long ago, the Packers were stacked at the tight end position. In 2022, that may no longer be the case.

Robert Tonyan’s future with the Packers is uncertain. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. He will also be returning from a torn ACL, perhaps meaning he won’t be ready for the start of next season.

Marcedes Lewis will be entering his age-38 season, but given his value to the Packers’ offense, it’s good that he will still be under contract in 2022.

Josiah Deguara has seen his role on offense expand in recent weeks since Tonyan’s injury, and he caught his first NFL touchdown pass last week against the Minnesota Vikings. He could be needed to step into Tonyan’s role full-time if Tonyan isn’t re-signed. That would require Deguara changing his current role, however.

Even if the Packers go with Deguara and Lewis as their top-two tight ends in 2022, it would make sense to look for a young tight end to develop in the draft. Next season could be Lewis’ last in Green Bay.

Of course, it’s possible the Packers are able to re-sign Tonyan, which would push tight end lower on this list. But until then, tight end looks to be a draft need for the Packers.
