Packers rumors: Davante Adams could get franchise tag in offseason
One of the Green Bay Packers‘ biggest offseason questions is whether All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams will return.
Adams, one of the Packers’ greatest ever wide receivers, is set to hit free agency ahead of what will be his age-30 season. In the past, we’ve seen the team walk away from top receivers soon to hit 30, but this may not be the case with Adams.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers could give Adams the franchise tag in the offseason before attempting to work on a long-term deal.
At the very least, doing so would ensure Adams remains in Green Bay for another season, although Rapoport noted it would cost around $20 million. How the team finds that kind of cap room, I have no idea.
There is, of course, the possibility that the Packers want it reported that they would use the franchise tag while they may have no intention to. This could be all part of the negotiation as they try to work out a long-term deal with Adams.
There isn’t a team in the NFL that wouldn’t want Davante Adams on the roster. He’s the best wide receiver in football.
Since the start of 2020, Adams has caught 221 passes for 2,736 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Last season, Adams set the Packers’ franchise record for most receptions in a single season. He needs 10 catches in the final two games to break his own record.
As of right now, Aaron Rodgers’ future beyond this season remains a beautiful mystery, and the same is true of Adams.
Green Bay faces a real possibility of entering the 2022 season without its greatest ever quarterback and all-world wide receiver, but also the possibility of both returning.
If the Packers do use the franchise tag, it’s perhaps a sign they’re not planning for a rebuild this upcoming offseason.
