Everyone is talking about the San Francisco 49ers’ talented rushing attack, and understandably so, but the Green Bay Packers also have an excellent running back duo.

One player who can make a difference for the Packers in the playoffs is second-year running back AJ Dillon.

The combination of Dillon and Aaron Jones has been every bit as good as the Packers hoped it would be this season, with both players putting up over 1,000 yards from scrimmage.

Dillon had a slight edge on the ground, rushing for 803 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. He could play a huge role for the Packers on Saturday night versus the 49ers.

Dillon’s numbers are impressive, but his impact on this offense goes beyond just that. His power makes him tough to bring down. Having Dillon running at you in frozen conditions at Lambeau Field isn’t fun for defenders. According to Pro Football Reference, 407 of his 803 rushing yards came after contact.

Throughout the season, the Packers have leaned on Dillon to wear down defenses. They can then bring in a fresh Aaron Jones or hit a play-action pass to take advantage.

Dillon’s work as a receiver has come a long way — he caught 34 of 37 targets for 313 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season. Remember when we were told he couldn’t catch? Dillon’s pass protection has also improved a lot.

As a result of his impressive season, Dillon earned the second-highest Pro Football Focus grade among running backs.

Up against a talented 49ers’ defense that ranks seventh against the run, the Packers need Dillon to wear them down. San Francisco also has a dominant pass rush. Running directly at them helps take that away.

Dillon is the perfect running back for Lambeau Field in January. Not just for the yards and first downs he picks up by running over defenders, but also for the impact his power has on defenses, creating opportunities for the offense to take advantage.

The Packers should get the ball in Dillon’s hands early and often on Saturday night. He can have a huge impact against the 49ers.
