How do the Packers and 49ers match up at each position?

Football is a team game. It’s a work of art, 11 players trying to work together in harmony, and another 11 trying to strike a discordant note through their song. An individual cannot succeed on a football field without the help of other individuals around him.

With that being said, it’s still interesting to compare individual positions on different teams, trying to discern which team might have the edge in their matchup. The Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers will face each other in the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs this Saturday. The teams last played each other in Week 3, where the Packers eked out a narrow win, driving to score a game-winning field goal with only 37 seconds left on the clock.

However, a lot has changed since that Week 3 matchup. Niners receiver Deebo Samuel has emerged as a legitimate threat out of the backfield, and running back Elijah Mitchell has cemented himself as a bell-cow RB for San Francisco. The Niners have won eight of their past 10 games, including a road victory in the wild-card round against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Packers, on the other hand, will likely be returning two former All-Pro players that didn’t play in the Week 3 matchup: tackle David Bakhtiari and outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith. Additionally, running back AJ Dillon will likely play a bigger role than he did in the first matchup, where he only had six carries.

Let’s start our comparison of these two NFC juggernauts by looking at football’s most important position.
