How do the Packers stack up at each position against the 49ers?
Packers QB: Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers is putting together another incredible season for the green and gold. Despite some offseason controversy, and a Week 1 disaster against the New Orleans Saints, Rodgers is currently a frontrunner to win the NFL MVP for the second consecutive year. Rodgers has thrown for 4,115 yards, 37 touchdowns, and just four interceptions, while completing 68.9% of his passes.
Rodgers’ most memorable moment of this season might have come against the 49ers. Receiving the ball with just 37 seconds on the clock, no timeouts, and down two points, Rodgers completed a pair of crucial passes to star receiver Davante Adams to get the Packers into field goal range. He fist pumped as he walked off the field, and kicker Mason Crosby drilled a 51-yard field goal to seal the victory mere moments later.
49ers QB: Jimmy Garoppolo
Unlike Rodgers, who likely will be able to choose where he’s going to play next season, Garoppolo’s future with the Niners is not in his own hands. After struggling to stay healthy and underperforming while on the field, the 49ers traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select QB Trey Lance with the third overall pick.
Garoppolo is a solid quarterback. He’s thrown for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, completing 68.3 percent of his passes. He boasts the 13th best QBR in the NFL, ahead of former MVPs Matt Ryan and Lamar Jackson. However, he does little to elevate the Niners’ offense.
According to ESPN, Garoppolo threw for just 172 yards and one interception with no touchdowns in San Francisco’s wild-card win over the Cowboys. While that type of performance won’t lose a game by itself, he’ll likely need to perform much better if he wants to lead the 49ers to an upset against top-seeded Green Bay.
