Position-by-position breakdown of Packers’ roster before free agency
Tackle
Under contract in 2022: David Bakhtiari, Billy Turner, Cole Van Lanen
Offseason need: Yes
Yosh Nijman is a restricted free agent, so there’s a good chance he’s back in 2022. However, there are certainly some questions at tackle.
Backup Dennis Kelly is a free agent. All-Pro David Bakhtiari played all of one quarter in his return season from a torn ACL. Is there a concern about his status long term? He’ll be under contract regardless with a cap hit of $22.77 million, but do the Packers need to strengthen their depth?
Billy Turner has a cap hit of $8.9 million, which they could almost cut in half by releasing him. Moving on would be a risk, though, as he’s coming off a solid season.
When Elgton Jenkins returns, he can play at tackle. So that helps. But he could miss the start of the 2022 season. The Packers should address the tackle position this offseason.
Guard
Under contract in 2022: Elgton Jenkins, Royce Newman, Jon Runyan Jr.
Offseason need: Possible
With Lucas Patrick hitting free agency, depth is a concern at guard. Jenkins will be back at some point in 2022, but he may need to play at tackle depending on what the Packers do there in the offseason.
Jon Runyan is an established starter at guard, but Royce Newman lost his job to Patrick late on. Still, Newman showed plenty of promise and should compete for a starting job in his second year.
Depending on where Jenkins plays when he returns, guard could be a need.
Center
Under contract in 2022: Josh Myers, Michal Menet
Offseason need: No
When healthy, Josh Myers put in a strong rookie season replacing All-Pro Corey Linsley. Myers is the Packers’ starting center moving forward. The only question is depth should Myers get hurt. The Packers had Patrick to cover this year, but he could be gone this offseason. Depth is the only concern.
