Packers: Aaron Rodgers named PFWA MVP for 2021 season
It’s another award for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
For the second season in a row, Rodgers has been named the Pro Football Writers of America Most Valuable Player. He also won the award in 2020.
Along with being named a first-team All-Pro ahead of Tom Brady, it sure looks like Rodgers is on track for his second consecutive Associated Press Most Valuable Player award, which will be announced the night before the Super Bowl. It would be Rodgers’ fourth.
Rodgers had been in the MVP conversation throughout the season, but for a while, it looked like Tom Brady’s award to lose.
But it’s hard to ignore Rodgers’ numbers and impact this year, having helped the Packers reach a 13-4 record and the top seed in the NFC. One of those four defeats came without Rodgers. He was on the reserve/COVID-19 list in the 13-7 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Rodgers’ numbers for 2021 were quite incredible. He completed 366 of his 531 passes for 4,115 yards, 37 touchdowns, and just four interceptions, with a passer rating of 111.9, which was a league-best.
I’m sure Rodgers would trade in every MVP award he owns for another Super Bowl ring. Both Rodgers and Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers were eliminated in last week’s divisional round, despite a Packers-Buccaneers NFC title game rematch looking the most likely scenario to happen.
Not only that, both Rodgers and Brady face uncertain futures this offseason. The two frontrunners for the MVP award this season could both retire. We’ll see.
The AP MVP award, regarded as the official NFL MVP award, will be announced in two weeks. For now, it’s Aaron Rodgers who is once again the PFWA MVP.
