Packers have two interviews for offensive coordinator opening
With Nathaniel Hackett being named the Denver Broncos’ head coach, the Green Bay Packers have started their search for a new offensive coordinator.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers held an interview with Los Angeles Chargers tight ends coach Kevin Koger and are expected to hold an interview with Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson.
According to Rapoport, the Packers’ top two in-house candidates for the offensive coordinator job are quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Luke Getsy and offensive line coach Adam Stenavich.
However, both coaches could be moving on this offseason.
According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Bears have offered Getsy their offensive coordinator job. He could call plays in Chicago’s offense, something he wouldn’t do in the same role for Green Bay. Ian Rapoport reported Getsy is the Bears’ “top priority”.
Rapoport reported earlier in the week that the Broncos — now under Hackett — will request to interview Stenavich for their OC job.
If Getsy takes the Bears’ job, it seems there’s a chance the Packers would want to promote Stenavich to OC. Unless he was offered play-calling duties in Denver, which is unlikely, he would be a great candidate to replace Hackett.
But it absolutely makes sense for the Packers to interview outside candidates, too, even if LaFleur’s hope is to promote from within.
Koger was part of LaFleur’s staff in Green Bay from 2019 to 2020 as offensive quality control coach, before taking the Chargers’ tight ends coach job in 2021. Johnson has some offensive coordinator experience having had that job for Florida, before becoming the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach in 2021.
We knew this would be an interesting offseason, but it’s already a complicated one for the Packers with three offensive coaches drawing interest from other teams. LaFleur has some difficult decisions to make in the coming days and weeks.
