Packers could lose offensive coach to division rival
Not only could the Green Bay Packers lose a number of key players this offseason, but also important members of staff.
Nathaniel Hackett — a key part of the Packers’ offensive turnaround as the OC the past three years — is set to become the Denver Broncos’ new head coach.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that Packers offensive line coach Adam Stenavich could join him in Denver as Hackett’s offensive coordinator. According to Rapoport, the Broncos will request to interview Stenavich.
But that’s not all.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the division-rival Chicago Bears could look to hire Packers pass-game coordinator Luke Getsy as their new offensive coordinator.
Getsy is a potential candidate to replace Hackett as the OC in Green Bay.
Here’s where it gets difficult for the Packers: Getsy wouldn’t be calling plays as the offensive coordinator for the Packers. That role belongs to head coach Matt LaFleur. However, in Chicago he almost certainly would call the plays as the Bears hired a defensive-minded head coach in Matt Eberflus.
Getting the play-calling role would count as a step up for Getsy in his road to becoming a head coach.
It potentially puts Matt LaFleur in a tough spot where he could lose three of his top offensive coaches in a single offseason.
Maybe the answer is to promote Stenavich to OC. It’s unlikely he would call plays in Denver with Hackett the head coach. But then the risk of losing Getsy is very high. The Broncos or Bears may offer him the chance to become offensive coordinator.
If LaFleur feels Getsy is his best choice to replace Hackett, he should offer him the opportunity. But if Getsy then gets the chance to call plays elsewhere, it would be difficult to turn down.
Who knows what’s going to happen? Tough decisions await for LaFleur.
