The Green Bay Packers‘ secondary has been solid over the past couple of seasons, and a big part of that has been the consistent play at the safety position.

Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage have been the Packers’ starting combination for three years now, but what lies ahead in the 2022 offseason?

Could Amos get a new deal? Will Green Bay exercise Savage’s fifth-year option?

2021 season review

Amos had yet another excellent season for the Packers. For the third straight year, he intercepted two passes. Amos also came up with a big interception in the divisional round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Savage did struggle at times, however, including in coverage. According to Pro Football Reference, Savage gave up eight touchdowns, double what he allowed in the previous two seasons combined. Quarterbacks had a passer rating of 117.4 throwing in Savage’s coverage — it had been 71.1 and 67.3 the previous two seasons.

Savage did still make some key plays, though, with nine pass defenses and two interceptions in the regular season.

What’s next in 2022?

According to Spotrac, Amos has a salary cap hit of $11.98 million in 2022. However, while releasing Amos might save the Packers almost $8 million, it’s not a move they should consider. If the Packers want to lower Amos’ cap hit, they should offer him a contract extension.

Amos is still only 28 years old, hasn’t missed a game since 2017, and always delivers. He deserves a new deal.

Green Bay does have a difficult decision with Savage. He is under contract for one more season but the team has the choice to exercise his fifth-year option this offseason. However, they will also likely pick up Rashan Gary’s fifth-year option.

Exercising both could be expensive. And with Savage struggling at times this season, would the Packers be better off making a decision on whether to re-sign him to a new deal after 2022?

It’s a tough choice the Packers have to make.
