Packers rumored to have interest in signing Von Miller
If the Green Bay Packers truly are prepared to go all-in for the 2022 season, signing a player like two-time Super Bowl winner Von Miller sure would go a long way to proving it.
Miller, a key player in the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl run last season and also a former Super Bowl MVP with the Denver Broncos, is set to hit free agency this spring.
According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Packers are among the teams interested in signing Miller in free agency. Wilson wrote that the Packers “have a lot of restructures and roster cuts to work through to accommodate a Miller deal”.
No doubt about it.
Green Bay still sits $29.8 million over the cap, per Spotrac, something they need to address before the start of the new league year next week.
Once they know Aaron Rodgers’ future, they will be able to reduce his 2022 cap hit either via a contract extension or by trading him, depending on what he wants. Through releases and restructures, the Packers can and will get under the cap.
To make enough room to be active in free agency is another thing altogether. To have any shot of signing a player like Miller, the Packers would likely need to sell him the opportunity to win a third Super Bowl as he would need to be willing to take less money, perhaps.
It’s clear to see why the Packers would have interest in signing the eight-time Pro Bowler. Miller showed he is still an excellent pass rusher, making four sacks in the playoffs including two in the Super Bowl. When the Rams desperately needed a play, Miller often delivered.
Signing Miller would certainly be an all-in move, and likely only a possibility if Rodgers returns and the Packers make a strong push for a Super Bowl in 2022.
