The Green Bay Packers gave Aaron Rodgers, De’Vondre Campbell, and Preston Smith contract extensions, franchise-tagged Davante Adams, and tendered Allen Lazard at the second-round level.

There’s a chance they could also bring back Rasul Douglas.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, there are “ongoing conversations” between the Packers and Douglas over a new contract.

Re-signing Campbell was understandably the priority on defense in free agency, but getting Douglas back would be another huge win. Douglas was phenomenal in 2021 and had a team-high five interceptions.

With Jaire Alexander injured for most of 2021, we didn’t get to see a trio of Alexander, Douglas, and Eric Stokes all fully healthy. If Douglas is back, it would give the Packers potentially the best starting cornerback trio in the league.

Fowler added that there is “high interest” from other teams, as there should be. Finding talented, starting cornerbacks is no easy task. Douglas proved he can be that with the Packers last season. Not only did Douglas hold up well in coverage, but he also made game-changing plays with five interceptions.

That included two game-winners (versus Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns) and two pick-sixes (versus Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears).

Even with Alexander and Stokes starting, Green Bay may need to address its cornerback depth if Douglas is gone. Re-signing the 2021 Pro Bowl alternate would go a long way to easing concerns about the depth and give the Packers as good a cornerback room as any.

Cornerback is a premium position and not an easy one to find consistent play at. It’s why it’s no surprise other teams are interested.

If the Packers can get a deal done with Douglas, it will be the icing on the cake on what has been a good couple of days for them. Bringing back both Douglas and Campbell would be huge for this defense.
