The Green Bay Packers needed to do something about Randall Cobb’s cap hit.

Entering the offseason, releasing Cobb seemed to be the most likely option for the Packers to help create cap space. Instead, Cobb has agreed to take a pay cut.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Cobb’s salary has been cut from about $8.5 million to $3 million. This helped the Packers get under the salary cap before the start of the new league year yesterday.

According to Over The Cap, Cobb’s cap hit for 2022 is now $4.15 million. That’s only slightly higher than the dead cap hit they would have paid by releasing Cobb.

The Packers get to keep their veteran wide receiver who has great chemistry with MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Cobb showed he can still be an important contributor last season, putting up 375 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games.

More important than just the numbers was that Rodgers often looked Cobb’s way on important plays like third downs.

For Cobb, he gets to stay with the team and make another Super Bowl push.

This team is good enough to win another Super Bowl, and their offseason work so far is a sure sign they’re going all-in to try to get it done. Having Cobb a part of that is important. If there’s a current Packer who deserves a Super Bowl ring more than just about anybody, it’s Cobb.

This offseason, Green Bay has franchise-tagged Davante Adams and tendered Allen Lazard. Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown look set to move on in free agency, though.

The Packers have a receiving corps of Adams, Lazard, Cobb, and Amari Rodgers at the top of the depth chart. It will be interesting to see how they add to this either through free agency or the draft in the coming weeks.
