What if the Packers signed free-agent Tyrann Mathieu?
The Green Bay Packers are not in dire need of a safety.
Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are one of the better safety duos in the National Football League. But Tyrann Mathieu is an absolute game-changer whenever he is on the field. Now a free agent, the three-time first-team All-Pro has to be looking to join a contender.
Green Bay should not change how they play defense. DC Joe Barry has that side of the ball moving along nicely. It appears to be a top-10 unit in fact. But Mathieu could add a different element to this unit.
His athleticism and versatility could take this whole team to another level. The Packers already have two very good safeties. They have an All-Pro MLB in De’Vondre Campbell, who is going to be around for a while. They have another younger ILB in Krys Barnes, who is going to continue to grow and learn alongside Campbell.
But Mathieu could play both positions in one. It’s called the “rover”. The player in that position assumes responsibilities ranging from guarding the opposing offense’s go-to option to pass-rushing and run-blitzing.
The rover is a spot made for a hybrid defensive player that can play strong safety and linebacker. That is exactly what Mathieu is built for. Do not let his 5-foot-9, 190-pound frame fool you. Mathieu is an absolute game-wrecker. He is a bully. He has an edge. He is a Super Bowl champion. He is just 29.
Imagine a defense made up of Rashan Gary (career-high 9.5 sacks), Kenny Clark (two-time Pro Bowler), Jarran Reed (career-high 10.5 sacks), Preston Smith (career-high 12 sacks), De’Vondre Campbell (All-Pro), Jaire Alexander (All-Pro), Adrian Amos (career-high 93 tackles in 2021), Darnell Savage (at least two INTs in three career seasons), Rasul Douglas (five INTs last season in just 12 games), Eric Stokes (second among rookies in pass break-ups last season), and Tyrann Matheiu (2010 All-Decade Team).
This would be a Super Bowl defense with the best QB in the game on the other side. Green Bay has just over $15 million in cap space.
The Packers have consistently been one of the winningest teams in the league for the last 30 years. They have the most championships in the history of pro football.
GM Brian Gutekunst should really think about giving the former LSU Tiger a call.
