3 cheap free agents Packers must add before the 2022 draft
Three affordable free-agent signings the Packers should consider before the 2022 NFL Draft.
Later this month, the Green Bay Packers will aim to strengthen their roster in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, they should consider making some moves before we get there.
The Packers have just under $15 million in cap space, per Over The Cap. Some of that will go on the upcoming draft class, but there is enough room to make a couple of affordable free-agent signings.
Now is the perfect time to get some help at positions of need by signing remaining free agents to cheap deals for one or two years.
Which players should they consider signing?
Packers should consider EDGE Justin Houston
Green Bay needs to add some depth at edge rusher behind starters Rashan Gary and Preston Smith. Four-time Pro Bowler Justin Houston could help a team in win-now mode.
A year ago, Houston signed an affordable one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. If he’s willing to sign a similar contract to join a contender like Green Bay, it would be well worth it.
Houston started 15 games for the Ravens, making 4.5 sacks and 17 quarterback hits. He wouldn’t be required to take on a full-time role in Joe Barry’s defense, but he could make a big difference as part of the pass-rush rotation. Especially when it comes to key moments in January.
Houston still has plenty to offer. It would be a low-risk move for the Packers on a cheap one-year deal. Sign Houston, draft another edge rusher, and the Packers will be set at the position in 2022.
