Packers should sign former division rival DL Akiem Hicks

Just ask Aaron Rodgers how good Akiem Hicks is. With the Chicago Bears, Hicks was a nightmare for Packers offensive linemen. In Chicago, Hicks made 31 sacks and 88 quarterback hits in six years.

Hicks’ best days as a dominant defensive lineman might be behind him, and he also struggled to stay healthy last season, making just nine starts. However, when healthy, Hicks can still play. He made 3.5 sacks and nine quarterback hits for the Bears last year despite missing almost half the regular season.

The Packers have done a nice job of building the defensive line. Kenny Clark is a Pro Bowler. Dean Lowry is coming off a career year. TJ Slaton is entering his second season and impressed as a rookie. Green Bay signed veteran Jarran Reed this offseason.

Add Hicks to the rotation up front, and the Packers would be set along the defensive line. Like Houston, Hicks wouldn’t need to start every game and play a huge number of snaps. But when he is on the field, there’s no doubt he can contribute both in run defense and as a pass rusher.

Green Bay needs to add more depth up front this offseason. Hicks could be an affordable option in free agency.
