Packers: Why a trade for DK Metcalf seems unlikely
The Green Bay Packers have a need at wide receiver. The Seattle Seahawks hit the reset button this offseason after trading away Russell Wilson, and they also have an All-Pro wide receiver entering a contract year.
A trade for DK Metcalf would make sense for everybody involved, right?
Well, it’s not looking all that likely.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that teams have called about Metcalf, but the Pro Bowler “really likes to be in Seattle”. Garafolo added that he believes the Seahawks want to sign Metcalf to a new deal.
Unless the Seahawks are made an offer that’s too good to turn down, it seems unlikely they will be open to trading their star wide receiver.
This follows a report from The Athletic’s Connor Hughes that shut down rumors of the New York Jets offering a first-round pick for Metcalf. According to Hughes, the Seahawks are “not accepting offers”.
Is there a possibility the Seahawks are saying they are unwilling to trade Metcalf to up the price? Maybe. Only time will tell. But for now, despite trading away Russell Wilson and then releasing Bobby Wagner, it seems the Seahawks don’t plan on trading Metcalf.
And the Packers also shouldn’t overpay. If the Seahawks were open to accepting a first-round pick, it would be something to seriously consider. But if it’s much more than that, forget about it.
Green Bay should explore its trade options at wide receiver.
If there aren’t any trade options, the Packers will need to focus on drafting one or two receivers and maybe also signing a free agent like Odell Beckham Jr., Julio Jones, or Will Fuller.
There’s a long way to go before the season and more than enough time to get help at wide receiver, but it doesn’t look like a Metcalf trade should be expected.
