Packers 2022 draft preview: A running back in the later rounds?
The Green Bay Packers are well set at the running back position in 2022, but should they look to add more depth later on in the draft?
AJ Dillon stepped up last year after Jamaal Williams left in free agency, ensuring the Packers had a well-balanced rushing attack.
Will Green Bay add to the backfield again in 2022?
Free agency recap
There were no notable moves for the Packers at running back in free agency. Both Aaron Jones and Dillon remain under contract in 2022.
Need in the draft?
No.
With Jones and Dillon, Green Bay has two running backs capable of leading the backfield if necessary, and Kylin Hill should return at some point from a torn ACL. If the Packers want to add some competition for the third spot, it should come late on Day 3.
Draft outlook
Just watch Brian Gutekunst draft a running back in the second round. Imagine the reaction of the fanbase.
Joking aside, this would be a real surprise. Unless it’s a receiving back who they believe will help the passing game, the Packers shouldn’t consider drafting a running back anytime before the fifth round.
Green Bay has its starting two set in Jones and Dillon, while Hill impressed during the preseason. Assuming he’s on track in his recovery from injury, he should resume his role as the third-string running back in 2022.
Of course, there’s no harm in adding some depth and competition if a running back the Packers like is at the top of their board on Day 3. Especially if that player can contribute on special teams.
Late-round options like Florida’s Dameon Pierce and UCLA’s Brittain Brown could help Green Bay on special teams while competing for a spot as a backup behind Jones and Dillon.
If the Packers draft a running back, expect it to be in the late rounds with an emphasis placed on special teams ability.
