The Green Bay Packers may need to lean on their ground game more than ever this season.

Fortunately, they have one of the NFL’s deepest backfields. While they didn’t add a running back in the draft, this group could be even stronger in 2022.

Running back is up next in our Packers post-draft roster breakdown.

Currently on the roster

Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, Kylin Hill, Patrick Taylor, Tyler Goodson, BJ Baylor

Offseason moves

The Packers didn’t need to make many changes at the running back position this offseason with both Jones and Dillon putting up over 1,000 yards from scrimmage in 2021.

Green Bay already has solid depth with Kylin Hill and Patrick Taylor, but the team did sign undrafted free agents Tyler Goodson and BJ Baylor.

Improved from 2021?

Yes.

Jones and Dillon will receive the majority of the snaps, but the Packers have improved their depth. There should be real competition for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

Key player

Aaron Jones.

This is a tough choice between the Packers’ two star running backs.

AJ Dillon could easily be the key player in the backfield due to his powerful running style and ability to close out games. Green Bay badly missed Dillon when he got hurt in the divisional-round loss to the San Francisco 49ers last January.

However, with so much turnover in the wide receiver room, Jones is now one of Aaron Rodgers’ most trusted pass-catchers.

Jones’ ability in the receiving came could be crucial early in the season as the Packers’ new wide receivers get up to speed and build chemistry with Rodgers.

Position outlook

The Packers have made significant changes at wide receiver and that could make the ground game all the more important.

While Green Bay has added talent at receiver in the draft, it will take time for the new pass-catchers to earn Rodgers’ trust.

The good news is that Matt LaFleur has arguably the best running back duo in the league to give the ball to.

Kylin Hill will be a player to watch once he returns from injury. He impressed in the preseason last summer and could be the Packers’ No. 3 running back this season.

There will be competition for the job. Undrafted rookie Tyler Goodson could be a good addition. Goodson has the talent to compete for the No. 3 spot, too.
